Blowing coat: surviving German Shepherd shedding season

Nobody warns you properly. One week your German Shepherd looks normal, the next you're pulling clouds of fluff out of him and finding hair in your coffee.
That's blowing coat. It happens roughly twice a year, and it's completely normal.
Why it happens
A GSD has a double coat: a coarse outer layer for weather, and a soft undercoat for insulation. In spring he dumps the winter undercoat, in autumn he swaps it back.
In between, he still sheds. Just quietly, all year, everywhere.
What actually helps
An undercoat rake, used properly, gets more hair out in ten minutes than a week of normal brushing. During coat blow we do it daily, outside.
A warm bath followed by a thorough dry loosens the dead undercoat and speeds the whole thing up. Two baths across the season is plenty.
When it's not just shedding
Seasonal shedding is even across the body. Bald patches, red skin, constant scratching or a dull greasy coat are a different conversation — that's a vet visit, not a brush.
And if you're still deciding whether to get a GSD: this is the part people underestimate. You will own a good vacuum, and you will use it.
The hair is temporary. Mostly.
